Twitter Proven to Impact Search Engine Rankings
Over the past 3 years most of us involved with marketing have heard of Twitter. At the same time businesses have prioritized their adoption of Twitter differently. Some business have made it a core part of their inbound marketing strategy, while others have delayed adoption in favor of other tactics.
More Signals to Prioritize Twitter
I know, there are so many things to do, and its hard to step away from focusing on the tasks that get visitors to your site from search sngines. However, an article yesterday from Search Engine Land explains how Twitter directly affects your SEO efforts.
So, to all you folks out there that dont have a Twitter account yet, or set one up but its sitting there lonely and abandoned, read on to find out why Twitter is not only important for building online reach but is also critical to help your business website rank in search engines.
How Twitter Influences Search Engine Rankings
First, a quick recap of some points- for more in depth information, check out the original article:
- Twitter profiles carry a score with Google.
- Its likely the age of your twitter profile and how many followers you have affect how search engines will calculate your profiles authority.
- Just like inbound links give a website credit, so does social media sharing. A lot of retweets can tell the search engine that this is a good, trusted blog article.
- When an influential person (including you) tweets your link, it is a sign to the search engines that its good, trusted content.
This information helps prove that social sharing has a positive effect on the reach of your business website. Like building inbound links and SEO authority, building Twitter author rank (or whatever they will decide to call it) will take time too.
Making Your Followers and Search Engines Happy With Your Twitter Account
Well, Im glad you asked. Havent set up an account yet? What are you waiting for? Head over to Twitter and get your Twitter account set up. If you already have a Twitter account, get over to Twitter grader. Well help you see which areas you need to focus on. Either way, if you need some direction download our in-depth kit on How to Use Twitter For Business. The kit will give you many of the answers you need to get started and be successful.
Social signals as a component of search engine ranking are only likely to get stronger. Whether youve thought Twitter was for you or not in the past, now is the time to build and solidify your Twitter presence. Having a website that ranks well in search engines when qualified prospects are looking should be a priority for every business.

Check out a sample section of the ebook contributed by Mitch Joel:
1. Blogging = Critical Thinking
If everything else went away (the readers, the comments, the community, the feedback), Blogging was (and still is) an amazing place to think about an issue or news item and work through it. I liken myself as a Media Hacker. A Blog is a great place for anyone to be a Hacker of whatever it is that they love. If you don’t believe me, then just watch Seth Godin and Tom Peters in this video: Blogging Still Matters… Now More Than Ever.
2. Blogging = Ideation
In using your Blog as a platform for your critical thinking, you will quickly start uncovering new and interesting business models and ideas for how you can push your industry forward or how it can/should be thinking differently. Writing a Blog, reading the comments and feedbacking into them is the ultimate Petri dish for ideation and innovation.
3. Blogging = Tinkering
The ideas and critical thinking are not always one hundred percent final. Blogging allows you to tinker with ideas. To work at them (like a complex mathematical formula). Slowly, over time, you start realizing how wrong you were, how visionary you were and how much further you still have to go.
4. Blogging = Relationships
It’s not about sitting in the dark recesses of your basement as you tinker away with words and thoughts. It’s about using this platform to connect. It’s about real interactions with real human beings. Some of my best friends are people that I would not have otherwise met were it not for Six Pixels of Separation (the Blog, not the concept). If you Blog, step out into the physical world. Meet other Bloggers. Share, learn and collaborate with them.
5. Blogging = Business
Make no mistake about it. My business blog started out as a means for my agency to tell the world how we think differently about Media, Marketing, Advertising and Communications. Over the years, this has attracted many world-class clients, speaking engagements, a book offer and many other amazing and interesting business opportunities. So, while it is not a place where we shills our wares, it is a place that is directly tied to our overall business objectives/strategy. It consistently delivers a very solid ROI to our bottom line (take that, you Social Media measurement naysayers!).
6. Blogging = Sharing
As each day passes, I like Charlene Li’s latest book, Open Leadership, more and more (her first book, Groundswell rocks as well). Many people think that Social Media is all about the conversation and engaging in the conversation. I believe what makes any media “social” is the ability to share it. To help you to open up. Not only can you share the concepts by telling your peers and friend about a Blog, but everybody shares in the insights as well. It has changed/evolved our corporate culture. A Blog makes you think more about how you can share your content, your thoughts and why others may want to work/connect to you.
7. Blogging = Exhaust Valve
A great Blog is great because the Blogger actually cares and loves to create content. If it’s forced, if it’s your “job,” then the passion rarely comes through. The biggest lesson I have learned in my seven years of Blogging is that my blog is my exhaust valve. After working a full day with clients and their many challenges, my Blog is my playground. It’s the place where I can let off some textual steam. Make your Blog your exhaust valve. Caution: be careful that you’re not Blogging simply to blow off angry steam. The steam and exhaust I am talking about is the pent up energy of passion that I have from doing what I love to do.

Gowalla Turns the Tables, Integrates With Foursquare
December 2, 2010

Gowalla, the popular geosocial network, has released version 3 of its iPhone app, an update that not only includes an improved interface and new features, but deeply integrates the app with Foursquare, its bigger and better-known rival.
Gowalla 3 is focused on reducing the barriers to checking in, improving the visuals of the interface, and adding new tools to make checking in more fun and useful. It makes its debut in the iPhone app store today and on other mobile devices in early 2011, starting with the Android.
It is the companys decision to integrate Gowalla with Foursquare, its rival in geolocation, that will capture all of the headlines, though. The Foursquare integration has two key components. First, Gowalla now lets you broadcast your checkins on not only its app, but Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook Places and Foursquare as well. Gowalla even lets you earn Foursquare badges and Facebook Deals through the iPhone app. As an added bonus, Gowalla also pulls in Foursquare Tips whenever you check in.
The second component of the Foursquare integration is just as impressive, though. Gowalla has created a new Universal Activity Feed, an aggregated stream of checkins coming from Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places. Instead of opening up multiple apps to see where your friends are hanging out, you can see all of their geosocial activity from one interface.
Gowalla 3 has other new features, as well. It has added better Retina Display support, moved the check-in button into a more prominent location, added photos to the Activity Feed, and bookmarking for keeping track of your favorite locations. There is also a new feature called Notes that lets you leave short messages for your friends as specific locations the next time they check in. Unlike Foursquare Tips, each Gowalla Note is only meant for one person, which makes leaving a cute note for your boyfriend or girlfriend at your favorite spot a far more intimate experience.
What Will Foursquare Do?

Gowalla CEO Josh Williams explained to Mashable that the companys future is as a socially curated guidebook. Its not focusing on delivering deals (there are many ways to get deals, from coupons to group buying) or providing elaborate game mechanics. Instead, it wants to help users discover locations through useful information delivered in a fun way. The geolocation startup is trying to solve the problem of how to get a smile on a persons face every time they check in. It even wants to making checking in to the same location (say a coffee shop) a unique experience each time.
The new Gowalla isnt a radical reinvention of the service; it still has checkins, an elegant design and the same Trips and Stamps that have helped it cultivate an active userbase. However, its decision to add Foursquare positions Gowalla as the richest universal check-in app on the market.
Gowalla did not work with Foursquare on this integration; it was all done through the API. That leaves the real possibility that Foursquare could throw a big wrench into Gowallas plans by blocking its rivals use of the API. The threat posed by Gowalla 3 is real; that alone could force Foursquares hand in the name of competition. It would also create a firestorm of controversy.
The ball is now in Foursquares court. Will it let Gowalla use its API, despite the potential damage it could cause its business? Will it block Gowalla, potentially igniting a developer and anti-competitive controversy? Could it even turn the tables by adding Gowalla integration into its app?
Gowalla has thrown down the gauntlet. Its Foursquares move now.
